An example of the tyranny of the majority problem in democracy, partially solved by things like freedom of religion being in the constitution I think.. Anyone know how this problem is tackled in modern democracies?

the mechanism for the constitution to prevent this was the 2nd amendment - this is why leftist types are attacking what is the rotting corpse of the 2nd amendment. want a hard left socialist paradise? just take the guns and open your borders to the 3rd world.

the problems get bigger as more people are given power and equality. today, just an average middle class american has no more power, voice, and social standing than a dirt poor immigrant who doesnt even speak english. anyone without millions in the bank has no measurable advantage over pedro or samir who've been in america for 2 weeks - or their kids with citizenship who want to vote for "change".

democracy, much like capitalism, is simply the lesser of evils. tyranny of the majority is inherent in democracy. the only way to avoid this is homogeneity and small population sizes.
