Don't do it! I've been there and it's an utter waste of time.
If you insist on it though, start going to local political events, network, introduce yourself to all of the local politicians you come into contact with and anyone else who votes. When you feel like you are well known and liked enough in your local area, run for office. Start with the most localized public office possible (least amount of votes cast= higher chance of winning the election). If you enjoy it, you'll start meeting more important political figures and can work your way up to higher office. You probably will never be able to win an election of an office higher than a city or county level unless you choose a major political party, so I hope you like democrats or republicans. I hate both parties so I didn't last very long in politics.
