First thing to do it figure out who your local representative is and see if they have any intern spots available.

Alternately, get started in local or city government. An aide it internship will get you inside the machine and let you see how it works.

This is assuming that you have, or are getting at least a 4 year degree. Aide and internships are a fairly good way to start getting experience.

Next, get a low level job in the local government and start making contacts. After 3-5 years, consider a run for a local office, with city or county. After few years of holding that position, consider a run for state office, then parlay that into a run for states rep in congress.
