First thing to do it figure out who your local representative is and see if they have any intern spots available.
Alternately, get started in local or city government. An aide it internship will get you inside the machine and let you see how it works.
This is assuming that you have, or are getting at least a 4 year degree. Aide and internships are a fairly good way to start getting experience.
Next, get a low level job in the local government and start making contacts. After 3-5 years, consider a run for a local office, with city or county. After few years of holding that position, consider a run for state office, then parlay that into a run for states rep in congress.

Don't do it! I've been there and it's an utter waste of time.
If you insist on it though, start going to local political events, network, introduce yourself to all of the local politicians you come into contact with and anyone else who votes. When you feel like you are well known and liked enough in your local area, run for office. Start with the most localized public office possible (least amount of votes cast= higher chance of winning the election). If you enjoy it, you'll start meeting more important political figures and can work your way up to higher office. You probably will never be able to win an election of an office higher than a city or county level unless you choose a major political party, so I hope you like democrats or republicans. I hate both parties so I didn't last very long in politics.

Politics should never be a career. Business is a career.

Have an issue you care about, start a low-level regional elected office. work on that issue, resume and contact build , step up from there.

What kind of politics are you talking about? What stage of your career? /u/NedTaggart has a good answer: If you're interested in DC politics as an intern, first stop is your rep, then your senators.
If that doesn't work, just move to DC and get involved. You cant get jobs in dc if youre not there - too many bright and motivated people are there for you to compete remotely. For experience and money until you find your first real gig, sign up with PoliTemps

Spend a few years working as an assassin destroying the character of candidates from the opposite party.
