It's because median income income earners don't consider themselves "working class", even though they work for a boss. It's a status thing that inhibits class consciousness, because they believe the working class is below them.

In reality, there are two prevalent classes in any capitalist society: those that own the means of production, but do not work, and those that work the means of production, but do not own.

This isn't a new problem, there have been conflicts between wealthy and poor ever since someone took a plot of land with food and decided "this land is mind and mine alone. I will defend it from any trespassers, and one may not tread here unless they pick for me, in exchange for which they will receive a pittance compared to what they produced".

Sorry for the diatribe, but I hope I explained myself well.

P.S.: Though, keep in mind the Democrats take advantage of the working class as well, usually in more subtle ways.

That is a good point. Before we can get out of this situation, we must first admit that we're in it.

And to your other point - neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have our best interests at heart. As far as I'm concerned they're just trying to keep us complacent enough not to do anything about this system that we live in.
