Because it's better for all parties involved that war be ended quickly. Assassinating leaders and murdering civilians only prolongs war.

Plus the kinds of things the Geneva convention forbids are the sort of things that if left unchecked can lead to serious long term hatred, which leads to reoccurring conflict that only builds

The ideas behind the Geneva conventions were created under a lens shaped by a millennium of war between states being armed disputes between kings, but after World War II, it's nigh-impossible for most of us to see war without some deep moral dimension. Extending protections to the armies of opposing lords is a simple cost-benefit analysis when it means getting those same benefits for your own in a war over who gets the oaken bucket this year, but when war starts to take on a "we're good, they're evil" tone 100% of the time, it becomes harder and harder to justify holding back against the demons.

Really the tribes wiped away by Genghis Khan will never ever get a chance to make war again. The Native Americans will never wage war again against the US, the land is now secure. None of the tribes that resisted the Islamic expansion in the Middle east will never make war again. The Carthaginians will never make war again. Can you name any of the tribes that the Egyptian Empire crushed? Even for its sort period of time Alexander the Great secured Europe and spread civilization through much of the near east and secured a future for Greece into modernity. Overwhelming aggression against your enemy means they can never make war again. History is filled with thousands of tribes and kingdoms that will never be remembered who's names are unknown only the Empires that crushed and secured there peace through violence survived for any amount of time and influenced world history.

Wrong. The world never has to worry about any of the tribes Genghis Khan utterly destroyed through his actions he ushered in an era of peace and trade for the far east not seen in centuries. The total violent nature of Islamic expansion crushed all rival tribes in the middle east for close to 1000 years in the region leading to great wealth. The utter brutality of Rome crushed Europe and brought the pax romana for over 400 years and an Empire for around 1000 years. The utter brutality of America against the Empire of Japan, Italy, and Germany has lead to peace for Europe for 70 years in Europe one of the longest periods of peace in Europe for hundreds of years and made Japan for swear war ever again a first for a nation state. Crushing your enemy under your boot heel brings about lasting peace in a region. Just examine the historical record.

Now consider Israel who has limited skirmishes with its enemies keeps getting attacked. The only nations in the middle east that have made peace are the ones Israel crushed completely in war.

It's too bad the only place you can hear about these grand empires is in history books. Except America, but we're still pretty young so we have plenty of time to reproduce the same mistakes that have been made hundreds of times before us.
