They probably realized they pushed Bernie a tad bit too far to the point where he would actually run as an independent. They're running a fine line of subtly rigging the election just enough to keep Bernie a reasonable distance behind Hillary, but not so much as to turn him completely against the establishment. The last thing they want his him running as an independent and splitting the vote, giving the republican candidate a guaranteed win.
Bernie was never a real candidate - this whole thing was socially engineered by the establishment. His purpose was to draw a huge internet following of new young democratic voters who would get passionate, get tons of momentum, get #FeelTheBern going. At the end of all this, Bernie gets up on stage, tells his supporters how amazing she is, and givies Hillary his endorsement. Liberals are driven by their emotions. His entire role in this is to exploit that to deliver Hillary the general. The radical leftists will vote for her because "muh feels, I'll vote for Hillary because I love muh Bernie so muchhh."

Most Bernie voters are educated enough to realize shillary is an evil cunt and not to vote for her.
