Upvoated because holy shit, did you put some serious thought into this comment. Very un-reddit-like, and therefore much appreciated.

Indeed it is quite easy to shut down a well-informed argument if you are a master at manipulating social discussions, but if you combine those techniques of propaganda with knowledge and truth (insomuch as you know) it is ever more effective.

I've noticed Google search results have also begun ignoring things like exact phrase search, and their broad match related terms are getting really liberal. It just sucks that we've become so dependent on such a closed-door organization with an eerily Orwellian motto to boot.

While Google keeps the specifics all locked up, this is due to advancements in the idea of "knowledge graph" as something independent of keyword search. Basically, Google has gotten much better at linking words with similar meanings and is using that to enhance their results.

If you want a starting point... http://www.cs.ucsb.edu/~xyan/papers/vldb14_gsum.pdf

And just keep in mind that is probably 4-5 years behind Google.

Use quotation marks around words you want an exact match for.

That used to work. Then it started not working. So they added "verbatim", promising that would work just like quotes used to. And then that started breaking as well. If they can't even get search right, who would trust them with anything more?

This is why I've started to use Aviator instead of Chrome/Iron. Built in adblock that deliberately targets Google/Amazon ad scripts before they can even be downloaded, and a built in userid spoofer so even if the ad does run it thinks it's looking at something TOTALLY different.
