If they call his bluff and he still shows up at the debate, he's gonna look weak as fuck. And if he doesn't go, he loses audience, giving Cruz/Rubio a chance to prop themselves up.

Yeah, pretty stupid move. It just gives everyone another example of his colossal ego. Do you think he even considered that they might call his bluff?

In a positive note, Rand Paul could steal the show.

Rand Paul is going to have to start doing some things to steal some limelight. idk what it would be. I thought the debate he suggested between him and Sanders (capitalism vs. socialism) was a great idea but I guess he didnt bite. Frankly, the fact that candidates have zero chance at winning unless the media covers them is catastrophic to democracy. It should be a law that candidates must all receive equal time in length and quality.

Well lets be honest, I would make it tough to get me on CNN if they spread lies about me too. At least it's for a great cause.

Trump is anything but stupid. He's clever, conniving, and media savvy. It may be that leading the polls this long has stroked his ego enough that he's now ready to get out and go back to making BILLIONS!. He's setting up a story he can tell himself and his minions about how much of a winner he is and the people just can't see it. As a bonus, he's made such a big deal of being an ass that any other Republican running will seem reasonable by comparison. He's done what he set out to do and now it's time for him to be a winner by getting out of the race.

Yeah, like people would watch the debate if not for Trump.

Also, the reason Trump made such demand is because the TV station is making a lot of money from hosting the debate and he think it's only fair if they donate some of the profit.

Even the first Democrat debates get its viewers because Trump said he'd live tweet it and it hit 15.3 million viewers. The second debate didn't do so well without Trump involvement, it only had 8.8 million viewers.

Trump absolutely contributed to viewership, but here's something else to consider:

The first democratic debate was held on the same day (a Tuesday) as the final game of the national league division championship where the Cubs win a post season game for the first time in almost 100 years. Even though people stay at home on Tuesday to watch TV, that was a big enough game that it surely took potential viewers away.

The second democratic debate was held on a Friday evening, which besides Saturday, is when most people go out and do stuff... So I personally would expect viewership to be low.

There is a rumor floating around that the DNC is purposefully avoiding views... Going along with the notion that HRC will win the primary so long as people don't get refamiliarized with her. Perhaps there's some truth to that.

He's going to show up, say they didn't pay him, but he had a change in heart so he donated 5 million himself. "I payed myself 5 million to be here".

He's so moronic sometimes. He thinks he's the center of attention all the time. How would the other candidates look? The debates aren't about him. It's about all the GOP candidates.

What? I'm just saying id CNN gave Trump $5 million, it would acknowledge that he's the "star of the show". It's supposed to be an even playing field. Trump uses Jeb and Rubio as stage props. I just know he's going to scream out "You're fired!" to one of them soon.

Donald Trump is proposing

The key words. He didn't say he wouldn't do the debate.

On the other hand, donating 5 million to vets and wounded warriors ought to pretty much be a slap to Bernie's face. Bernie is on the Senate subcommittee for Veterans Affairs and the continuing debacle with the Veterans Administration is all happening on his watch and he is doing nothing.

Are you kidding me? Bernie is one of the few non-veteran politicians who actually cares about Vets.

Right, Bernie's going to be "insulted" by Donald's paltry $5 million dollar suggestion when he has crafted and passed within the last year a $5 billion VA funding bill.

http://www.sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/senate-passes-veterans-health-care-bill

"I'm going to slap you in the face by doing something 1000 times weaker than something you have accomplished, how do you like that? Feel good about yourself now? Trump always wins!"

[–] lissencarak 2 points -1 points (+1|-2) ago

Oh yeah, funding the corrupt and inefficient VA with more and more money, while simultaneously watching vets die.

Good job there. Trump, however, will privatize and fix a lot of these provider-side issues.

"I won't do the debate unless they pay me $5 million, all of which goes to wounded warriors or goes to vets"

Either the article is blatantly lying, or you are.

the continuing debacle with the Veterans Administration

I'm guessing you mean the cost overrun? That's a problem but Trump donating .3% of the 1.6 billion dollar overrun (which is already being covered) to a marginally related NGO isn't a slap in the face, more like an obvious ploy.

[–] edistojim 1 points 4 points (+5|-1) ago

I try to refrain from lying so read the fucking article.

Donald Trump is proposing that he be paid $5 million by CNN to show up at the next Republican presidential debate.

Trump floated the figure, which he said he would donate to wounded service members or veterans, during a campaign rally in Georgia on Monday.

Cost overruns? Thats a common occurrence of the govt in general, no, I was talking about the dead veterans. How about the latest two employees stealing funds to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars and not even getting fired? They don't even have to pay it back. Does it sound like a leadership problem in the VA? Maybe a subcommittee problem? Google is your friend, look into that mess and maybe you'll feel differently although I doubt it.

"How about I tell CNN, who doesn't treat me properly ... I'm not gonna do the next debate, OK?" Trump asked the crowd.

"I won't do the debate unless they pay me $5 million, all of which goes to wounded warriors or goes to vets," Trump continued.

The whole quote, with context.

This seems like he just threw it out as an idea at a rally. His rallies are largely unscripted, and none of this sounds like he made an official declaration. I'm not taking it seriously unless he tweets it, or holds a conference, or says something without the preface, "how about I tell..."

As far as the "veterans debacle," I'm not really in a disagreement with you there. It's definitely just making a statement, not actually accomplishing much.

Trump is a deal maker, he knows what he's asking isn't ridiculous, 5 million is peanuts compared to the revenue Trump brings in.

6

[–] FormerBaltimoreRes 3 points 6 points (+9|-3) ago

Exactly. Trump looks powerful to me if he does that. The other candidates are dancing along like little puppies, hoping for CNN to throw them a scrap from the table, "oh please call on me Mr Moderator, please". These puppets also want to be the leader of the United States.

Give me a break. CNN has actively worked against the GOP for decades and furthermore used the debates to divide and conquer not help the voters. The establishment candidates know that. They just haven't been doing so well so the GOP is hoping for CNN to hurt Trump in an enemy of my enemy is my friend arrangement.

Trump hasn't looked that good in the last couple of debates. That aside, CNN really did a horrible job of conducting their first debate. I think that everyone, contestants and viewers should boycott them.

[–] safespacer 2 points 3 points (+5|-2) ago

Why is he doing this? It's obviously not about the money, he could easily donate $5 M himself. I'd like to think he's running because he wants to do a better job, but to get the votes he needs exposure. Is he assuming CNN would treat him so unfairly that participating would be pointless?
