Or if we are, we're the most benevolent empire in history, in spite of our shortcomings. Try imagining what Europe would look like today if we hadn't fought in WW2.

No immigration problems and no communism? Sounds lovely.

Russia did the heavy lifting in Europe.

Universal health care not undermined by immigrants, sound banking, incredible scientific advancements. You could probably even walk around Paris without tripping over gypies.

And people selling out their neighbors by constantly buying foreign sweatshop goods. Communities sending their money to offshore banks by shopping at Walmart/McDonalds/Starbucks instead of locally owned busineses.

Hence why nafta was a disaster. The vast majority of mexicans can not afford american exports even with zero tarriffs. With the tpp, everyone is going to move their factories to vietnam.

If you want national prosperity you need tariffs to protect your domestic workers

It's a chicken and the egg problem but if you don't have a decent manufacturing base in place before applying tariffs, prices will skyrocket and consumers will get screwed

I'd say you need to play to your strengths, and leave the t shirt weaving to those who will accept $0.50 a day for it.

America has two things going for it that, as far as I know, no major world power throughout history (except Britain) has had:

  • An "entire" landmass with unthreatening (and only two!) neighbors (Mexico and Canada are not chomping at the bit to invade America and conquer its lands)
  • Statistically irrelevant conquered peoples (native Americans basically wiped out)

So, even if the "empire" of America "fell," I don't think it would be to the same degree as the fall of, say, the Roman empire, or Alexander the Great's empire. I imagine it would be a lot more like the "fall" of the British Empire: basically just chilling out with the degree to which they are meddling in the lives of other countries.

The blog about the Thucydides Trap would be a better submission.

For one thing, America has scaled back its military considerably since the end of the Afghanistan war.

Secondly, we are not going ethically or morally bankrupt. We still have our problems but compared to most of Africa and Asia our morals are still far ahead.

We continue to fight against terrorism because we have a real problem with jobs, until we resolve our free trade agreements this will continue, it has nothing to do with a "threat against the empire", no one is attacking the US. We simply haven't figured out how to transition all the jobs created by military spending into something else.

Finally, say what you will but the average American still lives a very good life, if we are an Empire in distress, you sure can't tell by all the overweight government subsidized masses.

We just wait until everyone in the US has had enough. Keep informing, the moment of change will come eventually. It is inevitable.
