"For years, I've tried to stay out of campus carry discussions because I considered campus carry an overblown fringe issue gun activists use to justify making everyone else uncomfortable so they can exercise their own personal "security." "
My god, some people wanting to exercise their rights. How dare they! Instead of this, we need to tell them that their exercise of rights is not only illegal, but they are selfish for wanting to do so.
"I don't believe my students' chances in life will be improved by allowing campus carry, and, moreover, there is no evidence to suggest so."
Most mass murders occur in places that ban guns. When a person wants to kill a lot of people, they tend to avoid places like gun shows and police departments, as they know they will be cut down quickly. They instead target the places where people are most likely to be defenceless. By banning guns on a premise, you increase the danger that a person who wants to inflict a lot of harm to a lot of people will attack there.
Side note: There are shootings at police departments every year, but they usually only have one casualty - the criminal.
"Everything about firearms screams their designed purpose: to expeditiously dispatch living things. "
A firearm's purpose is to expel a small piece of metal from a hollow cylinder very quickly and to be able to place that piece of metal at range accurately.
I miss having the illusion of professors as being smart individuals.
