While the Oil companies dealings were at the heart of the matter, both sides used these companies as fronts and for the Soviet Union not to have been involved would have been the height of stupidity. Elections were constantly mucked with by both sides, the oil company was the seed of oppression and used to swing the vote to a group who were far more friendly to the Soviets. People often discount they context in which actions are taken in order to shore up a position. I have never believed the US was a bastion of anything good or evil. We fight dirty wars just like everyone else we have done some idiotic things and often pay the price for it, That Iran is the premier place for women in the Muslim world is truly sad there are so many good people in that area of the world but their peacefulness makes them irrelevant like it always had.

No its not a great bastion when fighting dirty wars it is hard to stay clean. I wouldn't underestimate the fighting and the intrigued that went on between the Soviet Union and the west. For them not have been involved would have been the height of stupidity on their part. For the British part in this it is beyond stupid to give them a handle to be used against them. Plus who knows what those companies were involved with just across the border. :)
