It doesn't have anything to do with thinking for themselves, it's just not believing that there's a god. There's not much more to it than that, and it's dangerous to assume anything specific about somebody based on their religion (or lack thereof) alone.

No, see, I read /v/Atheism and /r/Atheism. Clearly I am a free-thinker. I am enlightened by my own intelligence. I am euphoric. Believing in a God makes you weak, spineless even! It takes true bravery, courage, and wit to spend your days reading I Fucking Love Science and snippets of /r/Science while scoffing at Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, et al.
