It doesn't have anything to do with thinking for themselves, it's just not believing that there's a god. There's not much more to it than that, and it's dangerous to assume anything specific about somebody based on their religion (or lack thereof) alone.

No, see, I read /v/Atheism and /r/Atheism. Clearly I am a free-thinker. I am enlightened by my own intelligence. I am euphoric. Believing in a God makes you weak, spineless even! It takes true bravery, courage, and wit to spend your days reading I Fucking Love Science and snippets of /r/Science while scoffing at Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, et al.

To believe there is no god is just as much of an assumption as believing there is one. As far as I'm aware, there isn't any evidence that there is no god, only that parts of the many established religions are not true. There could very well be a god and we just don't have the information and perspective to understand what it is. I doubt it's some bearded dude in a cloud, though.

This is an oft-repeated statement by the credulous, and it's bullshit. There is simply zero evidence of deities. Not believing in the existence of something for which there is no evidence is not anywhere near as much of an assumption as believing in something for which there is no evidence. Could there be deity? Sure, and there could be dragons, unicorns, and Romulans using cloaking devices; difference is no one questions a lack of belief in those things.

There is a difference, in that Athiests do not follow the instructions of any religious leader, and are not inclined to wage war against others over religion.
