Couldn't causation be flowing in the opposite direction? IE why should I believe that the articles are planted to soften the target for a coup when I could also easily believe that Venezuela has put this theory together to explain all of the negative press? I'm not saying that their claims are impossible or even implausible, merely that there's simply no evidence. Furthermore, it could be an effort on their part to get their people to support them in spite of the horrible shortages they are experiencing.

Causation could not be following the opposite direction. US policy for Venezuela is "regime change." This has been true since about 1999. US elites want the democratic system in Venezuela destroyed, and they will do anything they can get away with to achieve this goal. This is not some extreme view -- it is plain reality.

As for any suggestion of balance or reciprocity between Venezuela and most other Latin America countries to the US, strangely enough, they don't 'hate' the US or even its government. They want to be friendly and included. Just look at the excited reactions in Cuba with the recent normalization moves.

The 'bad press' -- to be sure it is outright incessant lies by 'western' corporate media -- have persisted nonstop this entire millennium. They are status quo. Most countries see them for what they are -- vicious attacks against a democratic government. It's not exactly an emergency situation that Venezuela needs to counter suddenly.
