This is a great point. Nationalism and racism are often related, but you can't say every nationalist is racist -- far from it.
Other than that, it is not true that "nearly every economist" says that "more entitlement spending" is bad. Many are saying that is exactly what is needed.

Trump also talks about extending legal immigration options to our foreign students who are trained in the US.
Actually, between that and removing the abuses in the H-1B system, it doesn't seem like he has any issues with legal immigration, but he definitely has a protectionist, US-centric bend, which isn't bad.

Honestly the issue with entitlement spending is that people don't know how to take advantage of it and use it how it's meant to/how it can be best used.
I live in NYC and we have a few of these programs, but just to highlight something: Let's say I'm on welfare and I'm out of a job. Instead of using my welfare as a means of living, I use this unemployed time to register for Federal and State financial aid. After that, I go to one of the community colleges in the city and enroll in the ASAP program. When accepted, if my financial aid doesn't cover my tuition, ASAP picks up the rest of the bill and in addition I would also have a one month unlimited use metrocard given for free every month as a perk of the program.
I can get my associates without spending a dime besides bus fare to the school and back before the semester starts. Once the semester starts, I don't even have to pay for the bus or train anywhere in the city anymore! I can use this time to save up the money I used to spend on public transportation get a part time job and not have to worry about fare then use that money to afford rent in slightly better housing.
At the end of the day, I get my masters and get a good job in management.
You see the progression? The issue is that if you ask on the streets of NYC, almost no one has even heard of ASAP except people already going to community colleges. That's the problem with 'entitlement spending'

I believe the quotation said protectionism is bad overall.
