Private prisons are unconscionable.

A capitalist's job is to increase profits. This is literally the increase of profit at the cost of life. Prisons should not be for profit, they should exist for rehabilitation.

Some of these comments are atrocious.

Private prisons are unethical because their sole purpose is to generate profits. How do prisons increase profits? by increasing prisoners.

By their nature private prisons do not have an interest in rehabilitating inmates, quite the contrary. They have an interest in keeping existing prisoners and to increase repeat offenders. This alone is reason enough to abolish them.

Prisons, acting as part of the U.S. justice system should be required to remain public institutions. It's unconscionable to hand the power of justice over to a corporation for monetary profit.

How people can defend this barbaric practice is.... a disgrace.

Hillary's campaign contributors, aka private prison lobbyists, won't like that at all.

There are a variety of news sources to choose from.

The corporate owned dinosaur media outlets are choosing not to report this story because they don't want to get blacklisted from Hillary's campaign events and be banned from interviewing her. Or perhaps they also use lobbyists to buy favors.

His stand on this makes me have a tremendous amount of respect for him. Now I wish that he would tackle the prison rape issue.

There is a lot he can do regarding prison rape. Ease overcrowding to start with. Implement and enforce better standards, regulations and protocal for the guards to follow. And most importantly he can bring attention to the the issue and treat the subject as the serious matter that it is rather than a bad punchline for late night comics.

yes because government-run prisons are the better way to go .... /e rollseyes

in typical poiltcian-fashion .. Bernie attacks the symptom because its more tenable and helps his position better than tackling the problem

Private prisons are the problem and the symptom. They cause mass incarceration by lobbying for overly punitive laws and stricter punishments for existing ones.

Private prisons are the problem

No they are not ... without all the laws that make non-victim creating actions a crime ( like the drug laws ) that have been created by government ... there would not be a need for all these jails.

Government is the problem ( once again )

Good. But I'm still not going to vote for a socialist.

edit: do all of these downvoaters even understand that they need my vote, if they want their guy in office? Because this is making me think that Bernie Sanders supporters stand for anything except free speech.

Why didn't he do this BEFORE he was running for President? Answer: It's a stunt, he knows it won't pass.

Just a year ago I think almost nobody really appreciated how populist Americans, as a whole, were turning. Before Sanders the mere thought of somebody who runs as a socialist getting any meaningful support whatsoever would have been laughed out the house. Today Sanders is routinely pulling far larger crowds when he speaks than any other candidate, polling ahead of every republican candidate aside from Jeb Bush (who he's 1 point behind) and rapidly growing in popularity. I think Hillary's view is how most saw things - do the same shit, just stick a rainbow on it, make a few tweets, and they'll go gaga for you.

The point here is that thanks to Sanders, openly opposing bills like this is no longer so 'safe'. Any politician that actively opposes this might see that come back to bite him as Sanders' success at running for the highest level of office means this is all just beginning. We can expect to see increasingly populist candidates running at far lower (and easier to obtain) offices. Trying to defend spending billions on for-profit prisons (even though they're private, we massively subsidize and guarantee them) and the slave-wage labor they in turn sell to other private companies is something that's not so easy to defend if somebody actually starts calling you out on it. This isn't even getting into the massive conflict of interest in the government supporting an industry that profits largely when we imprison as many people as possible for as long as possible.

Well, everyone except 8 people, apparently. It's a cult of personality. His followers are the same twits that thought Obama was the messiah seven years ago.

He has a nations ear. What the fuck can't you do when that happens?

What politician in their right mind will defend private prisons? Yeah, all the ones taking their money. Good, let public opinion focus on them next.

It will never pass. Too much money coming from prisons going to campaigns.
