Originally I came to Voat hoping for a chance to leave the "extreme left" circle jerk that Reddit became for a more rational discussion. Unfortunately the political discussion on Voat has basically turned into "Extreme left circle jerk, with libertarian tendencies, and a dash of infowars.com", which as someone who is center left I spend most of my time wondering whether any of you actually understand or read political theory.
So in hopes of sparking a semblance of intelligent political discussion on the barren wasteland that was once the potential that Voat had, I throw down the gauntlet to all you conspiracy loving far left hippies that have infected Voat. One on One debate. Skype, streamed live via Youtube. Working title: "Hippies get rekt".
My political position: UK based, software engineer. Parents were lower class, I'm (And they are now) middle class. Center left, moderately liberal. Which compared with Voat basically makes me Ayn rand.
Private companies are not entirely evil. Taxing the rich is not a silver bullet to fucking everything, because the laffer curve is a well known and documented thing. The idea that "everything is the fault of baby boomers" is simply responsibility shirking in order to tell yourself that you have no control over your own destiny. Generally there is a reason certain kinds of people do well in life, the same kind of people who work hard and don't complain about aforementioned. The occupy movement is logically no better than the BNP/EDL types, and are simply looking for a nameless "group" they can blame everything on.
Sanders is overrated and isn't Jesus (Although a direction america does need). Even though Jeremy Corbyn is the best option of the 4 Labour candidates, his views are entirely unelectable and dumb. Israel and Palestine issues is around 40%-60% blame. Comparing Israel to apartheid is fucking offensive to the actual apartheid. Guns are dumb, and the reason america has such huge problems with their police force. Nationalizing things doesn't magically make them awesome, no more so than privatizing things magically makes them efficient.
The idea that liberty cannot be traded for security is factually incorrect. Most people who quote Orwell didn't understand the concept of his work, or his later views on his earlier works. There is no such thing as government powers that are unacceptable, simply unacceptable reasons to have them. Snowden did a very good and brave thing in an attempt to have a rational discussion, of which the left have squandered due to their unwillingness to seriously have this discussion. Anti-GMO and Anti-Vacc people are anti-science conspiracy fucknuts. The Microsoft hate is done by technically illiterate morons who don't understand legalese and liability limitation. Main stream media in general is more trustworthy than random sites because they actually source their fucking information. The idea that the right "hate the poor" is a huge hyperbolic misrepresentation of a lot of the right wing political spectrum.
So that should be enough to get all the hippies on this site riled up, and a general ideal as to where I politically stand. Simply respond with what you want to debate, your position on the subject, and if your position is actually different from mine I'll debate your ass one weekend or another.
So what are you waiting for?
