That's exactly what "robbery gone wrong" sounds like.
It sort of implies that there was some kind of willing interaction/transaction going on between the robber/rapist/murderer and the victim. It definitely implies that either the victim or the criminal was somehow INCOMPETENT/NEGLIGENT and that this led to a "failure" in the robbery/kidnapping/whatever. They're saying "if only the victim was more cooperative, the robber wouldn't have had to rape her and stab her 43 times, and then proceed with their originally intended robbery, and thus the victim would still be alive/unraped."
This is part of the VICTIM/PREY PROGRAMMING we have all been subjected to for decades WE ARE CONDITIONED TO SUBMIT TO CRIMINALITY. We have been conditioned to not resist criminals- don't shoot them, because that's what the police are for. Don't fight them if they try to take your wallet- that's the police's job. Don't protect your store- you have insurance, and that's the police's job. If you do man up and resist/interfere with criminal activity, you're more likely to end up being more heavily prosecuted than the fucking criminals would have been. We live in a world where shooting a man who breaks into your house in the middle of the night to death can result in the homeowner being convicted of first degree murder. Shit like this happens all the time, because Clown World Justice.
So now we're not only constantly told to ignore criminality and leave it to the largely ineffective police to deal with felonious bullshit going on in your neighborhood, but we're also aware that using a weapon to defend ourselves could land us in fucking prison, even if you were totally justified in what you did. If people throw rocks at your car, and you step out holding a bladed weapon shouting "DON'T THROW ROCKS AT ME, FUCK YOU, LEAVE ME ALONE!!", you will be arrested. The rock throwers will not. If you shoot a black man who is trying to pull a shotgun out of your hands while waiting for the police to arrive, you will be charged with murder.
This shit makes me sick.
