I am afraid that, if the ballots were not escorted and watched basically from the voter to the counting table, there would be too many opportunities for tampering. I note that you like the vote by mail Oregon system; but, I think it would be the easiest system to corrupt. Most voter fraud, that is actually caught in the US, is committed with absentee ballots — that can be mailed in.

Except voter fraud is an almost non-existent problem. Election fraud on the other hand occurs way more often. How is mail ballot tampering easier? You have physical ballots to deal with. It's not scalable. Electronic vote tampering on the other hand is trivial in comparison.

Election fraud is accomplished when a supposed winner of an election is declared that did not, in fact, receive the greatest number of votes from actual legal voters, no? Whether fraud is accomplished by producing extra ballots, or by miscounting existing ballots, the effect is the same. The secret ballot only requires the privacy of the voter during the marking of, and the sealing of, the ballot. Everything else should be publicly witnessed.

It is unfortunate but in politics it pays to consider the cynical option.
