These videos are pretty clear-cut in showing that Planned Parenthood was following all the rules that had been put in place and was acting ethically. The lady in the video was not the best public spokesperson for the group, but she thought she was at a business meeting, not in front of video cameras for the world to see. The Republicans have to make a show of this, of course, because this is red meat to their base. But I think anyone looking at this honestly, in terms of public policy, understands the politics behind the organization that taped this. If you want to make late-term abortions illegal, that's one thing, but banning the voluntary donation of tissue from those procedures makes zero sense.

Still, it was an effective hit piece, and I'm sure it won't be the last from groups like this.

Thank you. This is such a non issue.

What are they supposed to do with the aborted fetus? At least this way they can use the money to continue providing treatment to women.

It's not like Planned Parenthood is making money from tissue donation, either. It's breakeven for them. The money they get from tissue banks just makes it so they aren't losing money on tissue donation.

I don't really have an issue with planned parenthood using tissue they collected for research and recouping the costs, however, I do see a problem with changing protocols and treatment of patients in order to harvest wanted tissue. https://youtu.be/MjCs_gvImyw?t=278 She basically says, we have a protocol, and we will change what we do in order to get the tissue sample. She justifies it by saying she doesn't think the patient will care, and calls it a specious argument, but it is still changing the protocol in order to procure the sample. At that point, in my opinion, they are crossing into a territory of not just donating samples that are a byproduct of the procedure they are doing, but are actively harvesting samples for people and getting money for it.

That was the one issue that seemed valid from the video. If it's just a choice between equivalent procedures A and B, with no greater risk to the patient depending on which one they do, and performing procedure B has a better chance of collecting tissue, then it doesn't matter. The patient chose to donate tissue, after all, and all things being equal would prefer for the tissue to be usable.

However, if procedure A is in any way safer or less painful for the patient, then there should at minimum be some informed consent letting the patient know the risks and giving them the option of which procedure they want. From the video, it's not really clear there's any violation going on, but it's something PP should look into.
