Do you find this stuff on your own? Do you search it out intentionally? Iv always been impressed with people who can seek things out in the vast reaches of the internet. I have to fall down a rabbit hole. I feel like some people just do it naturally

Be me. Get a degree in COBOL in 1985. Learn to install token ring instead. Learn to install ARCnet and early Ethernet. Learn about modems and bulletin board hell. Figure out how to connect a networked office on fucked up Broken Ring to Nexis/Lexis through one modem. Adopt Quarterdeck's QRAM and QEMM so you can run DOS popups before Gate's spawn gave us HIMEM.SYS. Learn Wordstar and make it do spreadsheet shit before there were real spreadsheets. Discover there's something beyond Novell NDS, and IPXv4. Discover CompuServe, discover http, ftp, icmp, dchp. Discover how to gang modems, and how to get around it with ISDN (if you could get it). Adopt Netscape. Adopt a whole fucking array of browsers. Figure out how to get better Internet service than your neighbor for less. Watch everything become virtualized, off site, and at the sole mercy of a vendor with a signed contract that contains fine legal print. Discover the Dark Web. Fuck it, I've been down this rabbit hole for years, and wondering where everyone else was.

I wish I had this experience. I hate being a computer/net brainlet.

My best friend has a story that sounds remarkably similar to yours. He worked for Microsoft since the early 2000s. He said at first it was a lot of fun. Then it just devolved into the lowest common denominator. Red tape and bureaucracy killed the employee morale.
