I consider myself left of center, and I have never held up Venezuela as a scion of socialism. It's a cabal of corrupt crooks, a military junta, and nothing more.

A much better example of a "left-wing utopia" would be Scandinavia.

I always hate when people point at states that barely had a chance, or states that fail to understand communal concepts properly, and use it for a rather baseless argument on why any socialist concept will somehow destroy society. The Manifesto, while being the basis of many of these governments, says no where to do half the junk these governments do such as jailing artists or preventing proper public elections.

If you want a no-government 'utopia' to counter people with, throw in somalia. It's essentially a corporate utopia(a little money gets you anything you want). See how well that's doing.

The things listed in that article about what's wrong with Denmark have nothing to do with economic policies. The article basically says

So Denmark is a Social Democracy and it has among the highest happiness ratings in the world and one of the largest middle classes, but did you know people there fuck goats?

I have a hard time taking any article with a title phrased in such a condescending Rush "I'm a raging pillhead and hypocrite" Limbaugh fashion seriously at all.

If your sources are nypost and frontpagemag, it's time to reassess your beliefs that are being reinforced.

"So how happy can these drunk, depressed, lazy, tumor-ridden, pig-bonking bureaucrats really be?"

Perfectly. Objective. Article....

THANKS OBAMA!!!

This title looks written by an AM radio shock jockey in Alabama.

Well at least you're not bigoted... unlike all those shock jocks in Alabama! Thank goodness you were here to show us all the light.

BTW,

Should have added an extra "obama" in there for the full effect.

"Extra" implies that there is already "some"... the word "Obama" appears exactly ZERO times in this headline. I think maybe you've been stroking your ego a little too hard and you're starting to hallucinate... but at least you're not a bigot ;)

Who are the retards upvoting your hacky comment that sounds like it was written using tumblr-based madlibs?

Claiming that everyone on the left. or even those with socialist leanings, want things to be run the way they are in corrupt Venezuela is a blatant over-generalization. I don't assume every Libertarian here wants absolutely no economic regulations or voluntary taxes or similar extreme measures, or that every conservative wants to repeal gay rights, and for you to do so just shows narrow-mindedness. Actually, your level of sensationalism is reaching near propoganda levels. Plenty of ways to critique socialism without using straw-man arguments. By the way, how are things in the more capitalist areas of Latin America? See what I mean, you can't just draw sweeping conclusions on government function using a largely corrupt area as a base argument. Just because areas like Mexico are getting screwed by a capitalist cartel, having thier land taken and polluted, and having thier workforce either pimped out or driven to the ground due to international capitalist actions, doesn't mean I can or should discredit the concept of capitalism as a whole. Either extreme is stupid, as is your extremist title. You're only hurting your own argument.

Venezuela is not Socialist, they're a Mixed Economy like just about everyone else and not only that, they don't even lean Socialist. Their economy is market-based like the US. It's a shithole because of totalitarian leadership, not socialism.

It is so frustrating how people use all these failed states that only call themselves socialist as examples of why the system is doomed to fail :(

How can you say it is market based when Chavez and successor socialized major industries, and initiated price controls.

Do you even know what a market is? You can't have a market without private property which is being socialized or central planning schemes like price controls. It is the opposite of a market.

Nationalizing certain industries and corporations != Nationalizing the economy.

Do you even know what a market is? You can't have a market without private property

Yes you can, which is why systems like Mutualism and Market Socialism exist.

Its a failed state , rigged elections corruption. The leadership is locked into power . I hate it for the people but I don't see how they recover from this.

Yet socialists call for the abandonment of capitalism due to corruption.

It's almost as if corruption and the bloated central government required by socialism go hand in hand.

That's like saying Somalia a free market success story. Let's not compare to Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, France or the U.K. Let's pick Venezuela!

This is an extreme exaggeration. More of a story to make Americans question the movement in the US. To a large degree socialism is already happening in the US. The only difference is the rich are not paying their share.
