I don't blame the pests for wanting to be indoors when it's winter outside. That's an entirely rational thing for them to do, and from their perspective, it is the best option.
That's not going to make me feel bad about killing them, because I don't want them in my house. If I let them stay because I'm a softhearted fool, they'll repay me with disease and eating up my stores. My destroying them is an entirely rational decision.
And, I would argue that understanding the enemy prevents us from underestimating them. I understand that some folk are soft and will sympathize with them, but I'm not one of those people. Whether or not my enemy is justified in his actions against me is irrelevant: I will still respond in kind, but understanding why he made the moves he did may give me keener insight into his approach and how he may counter my responses, and so on.
Whether or not (((our enemies))) are literally evil isn't my concern, as I don't believe in objective morality. Their actions are destructive for my people, which is sufficient reason for me to seek their destruction. I don't need an outside justification beyond that, nor do I need an external source of morality to give me the okay for my thoughts or actions.
