What a corruption of the memory of the real underground railroad. My recent ancestors were part of that in Massachusetts, Vermont, New York and New Hampshire. They used to get pissed at me when I was a kid for suggesting the railroad should have dropped them off in Liberia. I outgrew that, and eventually came to see the dignity in it all. What a drama queen that Maddow is! (I'm glad, though, someone keeps us up to date, cuz I can't stand to watch it.)

That was the 1950's and I was a punk nine year old, probably getting a rise out of Grandma and Grandpa, just because I could. They were old line New Englanders, liberal Republicans. I honestly can't remember what my reasoning, if any, was. Truth is, if anything, I probably instinctively sensed no good deed goes unpunished. I have since outgrown those juvenile habits, but the truth of the matter is, the blacks moved in to their neighborhood and by the time my Grandpa died it was unsafe for him to walk to the corner store a few blocks away. That was the old neighborhood. It is now Irish and Asian & no problemo. :)
