Just dawned on me, a big part for the disconnect between the left and the right.
Bear with me through some exposition and background, there is a point I promise.
We take with human nature the proclivity to anthropomorphise things. Also we know from the bible that idolatry has always been a problem. Finally, many tend to assume things about others as a projection of their own flaws. For example a cheater will assume others are cheating and a fair minded person will probably assume others are playing by the rules.
So to apply all this to the left (of course some of it applies to the right as well but I submit here with this post that our differences along these lines are broad):
I despised George Bush and Dick Cheney even more. I knew them as sloth and evil. So as every other sucker I swung to the 'other choice' and supported Obama. (for the first term roughly)
Operant word being 'supported'. Not fan boi worshipped. Not a Shepard Fairey 'Hope And Change' with Catholic Imagery worshipped. 'Supported'.
And now, with wide open eyes and a truer understanding, better information channels, I 'support' President Trump. I don't worship him as an idol.
So the left are projecting their hero worship onto us.
Why do they need idols? Because of their flimsy, incoherent, and often wrong view of the world. Their good intentions such as 'let everyone in the country' need figureheads to carry the burden of how the ideas don't actually work and are hypocritical. They worship ideas and get them mixed up with people, so ideas are never accountable to logic or debate.
This works as a weapon as well! They project some kind of idol worship onto us, and they can superimpose the straw man of Trump over every debate, so the ideas they accuse us of having can never be corrected or defended, like a copyright watermark covering the page of a book they have written for us and called our script and scripture.
