Depends what you mean by "us". People like Commander Rockwell had it figured out shortly after the war. Patriots like Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh knew long before and warned us.

Well actually that was for more practical reasons. They didn't the troops in field under patton could handle it combat wise, they were prepared logisticallly, and didnt have any serious war plans ready. Plus how could they sell public on extending it?
