I would argue its not just the guns but also America's sense of self, the patriotism in the USA, the right to buy and have a home, wave your American flag, also Hugely Important the Right to FREE SPEECH. There are a shit ton of countries which have high rates of gun ownership Serbia, Iraq, Yemen, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and they are still shitholes....if a battle fight or war ever does break out.... lets hope not but when you face a government with Tanks, F-16s, cruise missiles, MIGs, Battleships, satelites, there is only so much your firearm could do, eventually the tyrant dictator government could win over any armed populace. There are also a shit ton of countries where guns are BANNED and they are also violent shitholes, Jamaica, Lebanon, East Timor, Iran, parts of Africa etc I think what makes America unique is its culture, the US Constitution and its right to free speech as well as its right to bear arms. I have a feeling most moslem or african nations would be shitholes regardless of the right to bear arms or not.

1) Look at Iraq and Afghanistan. They're a bunch of gorillas going against tanks, fighter jets, the whole 9. Yet, they are holding their own. Look at Vietnam. Gorilla tactics can get you pretty damn far.
2) The American people far, far out number the military. Yes, the military can destroy us all with drones, but they will literally destroy the entire country, infrastructure and all, in order to do so.
3) If for some reason a revolution broke out, the military is on OUR side. At least for now. If the generals weren't on our side, I'd still wager the overwhelming majority would be.
Basically, as long as the average American can own firearms, I think we stand a pretty good chance to fight a revolution, heaven forbid, it ever comes to that.
