Bolt or semi-auto doesn't change the damage capabilities of the round fired they do not change range either. The type of ammo and way they are used changes those.

Not many Americans care to pay for the tax stamp to buy an automatic weapon. Can't even open it up at most ranges.

What you're thinking of is caliber. Hunting rifles are typically chambered with rounds designed to kill an animal quickly, humanely, and typically from ~100yds.

The .223/5.56 most commonly found in the AR-15 "assault rifle" is a .22 caliber and not legal for hunting in many states because it is often not humane. Medium and Large game in the US is most often hunted with a .30 caliber or larger rifle (though sometimes magnum pistol) round. They have more mass and more kinetic energy. That makes them more effective per well-placed shot and harder to stop with body armor.
