If the two men are being truthful, they won't get criminally prosecuted but could lose everything (wife, career) thanks to the mob if their names get exposed. Even if they aren't being truthful they risk losing the same should their names get found out. They are taking a big risk for Kavanaugh either way.

It doesn't matter to the two men's personal criminal liability, but in the big picture of national opinion, this is huge.

A fringe on the left screams "rape!"; a fringe on the right screams "perjury!"; a huge mass in the middle remains unsure of what the actual truth is. Successful politicians serve the huge mass.

This narrative explains the accuser's rape claim as a non-perjurous slightly false memory explained by her drunken state at the time. This story makes Blasey Ford not a liar, per se, and it makes Kavenaugh not a rapist. This news defuses the bomb.

The left will try to destroy these two men. It's what they do to people who get in their way.
