It's a natural result of how wealthy we were in the 1950s and 1960s. Kid gets a job fresh out of high school. Dad tells him to turn that radio down. Kid says, "Fuck you dad, I'll go get my own house, with black jack and hookers!" And he does, because he can buy the home outright with only four years of work with just a high school degree. 1970s were the turning point, and we've been in decline ever since.

Or Capitalism just sucks at handling post-scarcity. It caused a bunch of countries to collapse in the early 20th century the US only managed to keep communism away by adopting some socialism (aka the New Deal). We're in the same boat today. Goods are cheaper than ever, but with machines doing most of the work there's little need for serfs.
