They didn't side with Germany, they stayed neutral. It was too soon after the war of independence to ally with Britain for most people and allying with Germany would have gotten the country invaded extremely quickly.

Individual Irishmen fought on both sides, but that's true of almost every major european conflict in that last 300-400 years or so.

No? They ran POW camps for German aviators who accidentally landed or crashed in Ireland, but the did the same thing for the allied nations.
