The idea that amnestying student loans will cause students to become conservatives is like the idea that amnestying illegal immigrants will make them into conservatives, imho.

You're not amnestying them. You're allowing them the option of bankruptcy, which already exists for pretty much every single other type of debt in the world.

Bankruptcy is not amnesty.

You can't compare it to illegal aliens, but if you did, it would be that they could be amnestied but have no access to any forms of welfare or government assistance for 10 years. And they couldn't bring anyone else with them, and if they leave they can't come back. And any new immigrants also can't have welfare for 10 years.

If you want to solve the problem of illegals, all you have to do is remove the welfare and government handouts. See how many stay when they don't get free housing and food.

Here's what I'm saying, amnesty is not a word that exclusively pertains to immigration, but it does in our political consciousness.

Forgetfulness; cessation of remembrance of wrong; oblivion. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/amnesty

So bankruptcy is amnestying someone of their debts. The metaphor works, because both groups are leftist-socialists are both groups will be ungrateful.
