I covered it above. His ex-wife's mom's dad was Jewish. That's why he said on my wife's mom's side. Which 'side' means her mom/dad in this case it was her dad. Which means her grandmother was not Jewish which if you go by your talmud law then she can't be Jewish... but I don't really know the Jew laws.

All Jewish religious movements agree that a person may be a Jew either by birth or through conversion. According to halakha, a Jew by birth must be born to a Jewish mother. Halakha states that the acceptance of the principles and practices of Judaism does not make a person a Jew. HER MOTHER IS NOT JEWISH. THEREFORE SHE DOES NOT FIT YOUR DEFINITION. SHE ISN'T JEWISH. Part Jewish. Because of her grandfather.
