I play a lot of modded Rome Total War. That game has taught me that taxation is important to pay for a military to maintain order over a populace that is being taxed heavily to pay for a military to maintain order over a populace that is being taxed heavily...

Also to pay for my wars of expansion and to maintain my aristocratic grip on power.

Just in time for a new EU army.

Gotta deal with these secessionists somehow, just like the War of the States... To firm a more perfect union... Of federal power and central banking, fiat currency.

Using tax money to promote taxation. We have now truly reached late stage statism.

I wonder if I could get EU bux to translate and distribute "How an economy grows and why it doesn't".

That price tag tho.

I looked up what it cost to make an actual episode of Star Trek and it was roughly ten times that, but then they're roughly ten times longer...

Cringey.

That's actually really good. I'll give it a proper look later.

It is a good introduction to libertarian economy in a few dozen comic book pages. It won't give you new insights if you have done more in-depth reading, but it is an easy and simple way to red-pill someone uninitiated.

Irwin Schiff also ran for Libertarian Party candidate in 1996.

So I decided to give it a spin. The game unskippable animations which makes it pretty slow. Individual buildings can be upgraded, but that wasn't explained in the tutorial. I couldn't find police stations to upgrade to improve the crime situation. And it's nearly impossible to see how much money is in the general fund. I jacked taxes up to 50% and it worked fine for 2 years, then they said they needed an airport and building it broke the bank and then happiness went from 100% to 0%. Each of the government sectors has a number beside them but I couldn't figure out how to improve that. Game prompted me to upgrade green spaces to improve pollution, but all green spaces were already max level.

But some things that are amusing: Leveling up banks increases crime. Leveling up administration buildings increases crime. The game very much believes in the Laffer Curve and taxes beyond 50% means less revenue.

Overall the game is way too simplistic and is terrible at conveying information. I'm developing games myself and I'm aiming for a better economic model than this.

At least a few things are realistic.

How high do they let the taxes go?

Is there any penalty for raising them?

I just told you... Beyond 50%, revenue decreases. Plus there's the problem of happiness. I went from 100% at 48% to 0% at 49%, but the happiness probably dropped because the airport bankrupted me.

If you look at the tax rate in the US, it's probably above 50%. 22.5% federal income tax for payroll and SS, approximately 10% for property tax. Approximately 10% for sales tax (adjusted, because it's charged on post income tax earnings). Approximately 12% for healthcare (since this is covered by most other countries). Add in gas taxes (which are baked into the costs of most goods via transportation costs). Then add state income taxes and various fees/fines.

Overall the US tax structure is incredibly regressive as many forms of taxation disproportional affect lower incomes. Social Security has a contribution cap, limiting the impact on higher incomes. Wealthier people spend a smaller percentage of their income on housing, reducing the impact of property taxes. Healthcare costs are flat so those also don't impact the wealthy all that much.

I know how much you hate on taxes, but they're not inherently bad. They're just poorly structured in the US so of course they feel awful. Then Trump comes along and promises tax cuts, but it's really not a fix for our regressive tax structure so nothing really changes.

That sounds like a pretty poor "look the more developed a place is the more crime there is" which goes against common sense. There is probably some asshole who decided that because the most developed nations in Europe have and will continue to have problems with unmanagable and unassimilatable foreigners who are pressuring criminal justice systems that you have to tie that to development as a "by product" and gloss over the root cause.

Or... More bureaucracy means more potential for graft. Not all crime is robbery and rape. White collar crime is a thing too.

You have to pay out of government funds to upgrade residences and business structures. So it's the exact opposite of what you want.

There are only few armed citizens in the EU, and the EU is working overtime on disarming them as well.

I'm hoping for another exit vote. If some of the visegrad group start dropping out, it'll make it more tempting for everyone else, since brussels won't be able to hold the threat of withdrawing trade over their head.

It's not a bad game for $120,000! First time they've been on budget! But this game is stupid. It doesn't allow me to do anything. I want to ax a lot of shit, and they make it mandatory.
