You need to bone up on your castes.

  • Peninsulares: Persons of direct Spanish descent born in Spain: highest in the Spanish Casta System.
  • Criollos: Persons of Spanish descent, but born in Latin America.
  • Indios: Indians or original races. Their status in the system was based off a family’s personal wealth. In fact, many Aztec and Mayan nobles were quickly absorbed into the Spanish nobility. The Indian slaves always mentioned in school were generally already slaves or of a lower class.
  • Mestizos: Child of Spanish and Indian parents.
  • Castizos: Child of Spanish and Mesizo parents. Children of Spaniards and Castizos were often classified Criollos.
  • Cholos: Children of Indian and Mesizo parents.
  • Mullatos: Persons of the first generation of a Spanish and black parents. If their mother was Spanish, they would be free. If their mother was black, they would be slaves.
  • Zambos: A black parent and an Indian parent.
  • Negros: Persons of black ancestry: the legal lowest rung on the casta social ladder.
