When I was working in France, I noted how many of the police in Paris carried HKs and similar military rifles. But, my French coworkers commented that they would never ever fire them ... they were just for show.
The issue being : the French court systems and laws are so pathetic that officers have no protection. Killing someone in the line of duty is often career ending ... even if the officer did everything right. Further, the courts would look at manslaughter charges if they thought they could make something stick.
So, the officers will only use their guns if their lives are in imminent danger. If they can run / drive away they will do so first. The French police will not protect you. They will run and leave you to be robbed / raped / murdered.
So .. the next time your liberal friends say: "You don't need guns, the police will project you." Please show them this video and explain how there is a correlation between disarming the honest law abiding citizens and neutering the police force. France is just the extreme example but other European states have made similar strides to neuter their police forces.
By the numbers: On average, each year there are more police involved shooting deaths in a single city - Chicago vs in the whole country of France.

I mean.. Isn't that what a police officer's gun should be? A last resort?
I get what you're saying, and the whole situation is fucked, but, I just think you went a little too far, there.

It's an overall chilling effect on the French officers that makes them look to protect their own livelihood before they protect the general public.
