The phrase about not talking religion or politics is a gross cop-out designed to maintain the status quo, keeping people from thinking critically about issues that actually matter in society, and branding it impolite when someone is outspoken. Fuck polite society; we cannot afford that luxury anymore.

Nah, it's designed to not cause fist-fights among people who actually otherwise like each other.

I have no qualms talking politics or religion with my buddies when alcohol isn't a factor. We're all calm and rational people in those instances. When alcohol gets involved, though, is when shit hits the fan.

The alcohol caveat I can empathize with (still don't like self-censoring, but not seriously fist fighting buddies is good), but the fact remains that society at large is conditioned so they won't generally get into much detail or logic when discussing politics, regardless of whether they are imbibing liquor.
