Does everyone remember when the Democrats tried to make buying a gun into mother-may-I by establishing a gate using the "no-fly" list? It was like one year ago. The no-fly list, a closed list that grew exponentially (verified by the few leaks we had, a literal exponential), with no known entry or exit criteria, was to be used. The Republicans, instead of opposing this on the grounds of it being a totally ludicrous reason to deny a constitutional right, instead decided to add a rider that provided for ways to get your own ass off the list if you are listed without actually being a suspect for terrorism. This was win-win for the Democrats, because once the ability to buy a gun was found in court to be blocked by being added to a list with no criteria or requirements or any other thing, the right to own a gun would be trivialized.
This was just last year. Of course they have "lost touch". It's totally deliberate, they were just hoping that nobody noticed.
