Some stores are fundamentally left, like Target and JCPenney, and people aren't willing to put up with their crap anymore.

Clinton won 500+ counties, while Trump won 2500+ counties
BUT
The Clinton counties account for something like 2/3s of the American economy.
http://www.attn.com/stories/13222/the-economic-output-of-trump-and-clinton-voters
So if these big box stores write off Trump counties, and only go with Liberal Left Clinton counties, they will likely be writing off their poorest performing stores in the poorest performing sectors of the country. It's not always a bad decision to cut the worse 10 or 20% of your stores. It could even be a good thing.
This will help the financial decline of these areas because there will be less jobs in the area, etc.
This continues the trend of splitting the haves vs the have nots
So in terms of economics, being left leaning might not be a "bad thing". It just might be "good economics" for these companies
They might be willing to concede the conservative areas to Walmart, etc.
