I think it's more to do with the fact that Trump is anti establishment and for the first time ever they're finally being threatened. The Republicans have fought Trump longer than the Democrats, and they all lost. Look at all the former Republican presidents lining up and shilling for Illary. And now all of the bullshit they worked for is threatened, which they never saw coming. Problem is that the threat is from the inside, not the outside. So unlike 9/11, they can't rally all of the people they rule over and get them to invade some other nation, because the very people who threaten them are the American people.
A lot of their power seems to be related to familiarity. The more they stay in the limelight, the more they remain relevant and capable of being elected/re-elected. Probably why they are having so many photo ops and weird ideas like TV shows for Illary. And she's given more speeches than she probably gave during her campaign.
