You assume Trump's proposition wasn't just a debate strategy why?
We import about $270 billion goods from Mexico... 20% of that is about $54 billion... and the wall is estimated to cost about $20 billion.
See how the numbers already don't add up.
If Trump is serious about using import tax to pay for the wall, Nieto will "negotiate" Trump down from 20% down to 1%... Trump will say "Wow - you're a great negotiator! It's true! Bigly!", Nieto will tell the Mexicans that he negotiated long and hard and then everyone will be happy and relieved... and Mexico will end up paying for the wall within about 10 years...
...and when the dust settles, everyone will understand that Trump got everything that he wanted.

I don't know if it was a debate strategy or not. I was just saying that from what I recall from my economics classes, import taxes tend to raise the price of goods. That's all.

Yeah except that dumbass started talking shit and refused to negotiate, because he's not smart enough to see what Trump was offering. Now he looks like a dick, and we get more import taxes. Trump should apply that rate to all imports and give everyone free healthcare, and use the extra to pay down the debt.

Trump has no intention of implementing a 20% import tax. This is just negotiation strategy and Nieto's refusal to negotiate is a negotiating strategy too. Let's just see how this plays out... because I suspect it will end up with a completely alternate solution that Trump's already chosen or an import tax of 0.5%.
