I find it VERY interesting how when comparing like-for-like jobs, the white man actually seems to be at the bottom, not the top...

Some patriarchy this is turning out to be.

What blew me away was the calm and professional discussion they had. No shouting, almost no interruptions, citing sources, etc. What happened? O_O

The gender pay gap does exist, it's just that the reasons given for it are untrue. Women ON AVERAGE earn 77 cents to the dollar because they ON AVERAGE choose lower paying jobs than men. Women are also less likely to negotiate pay and ask for raises or promotions. However employers paying less for the same work is for the most part a myth.

They Don't earn on Average 77 cents to the dollar. It's more like 98 cents and that 2% is because they choose different fields, make different life choices (kids, ect...). The 77 cents myth comes from a study with about as much credibility as the "vaccines cause autism study".

Is it that they actively chose that or were pushed into "traditionally female" roles through culture and inherent bias, like the recent Tim Hunt debacle?

Porn actress and Fashion models are paid a lot more than their male counterparts.

I could believe that, but I would want to see some proof that it was due to gender alone (i.e. sexism) and not just a greater demand for male actors or more leading male roles where the lead role pays higher. If the perceived pay gap is just due to a greater demand for male actors, then I would not consider that in of itself to be a problem because it would mean males and females are being paid the same for equivalent roles with just more roles open to males. Now, I could see how there could be a problem with having less female roles or female lead roles, but that isn't related to pay itself and is a problem more due to consumer demands of the film industry. This same situation, but vice versa with males being perceived to have a lower pay, could be seen in the modeling industry where there is a higher demand for female models and likely a higher demand for females in top modeling gigs. Even if males and females are payed the same for equivalent positions, a pay gap could be perceived due to the lower demand for males in the higher paying roles.

Going to have to agree with what KingKong is saying about the difference not due to gender.

Asian actors are paid less than White actors in Hollywood. That's just due to supply and demand. Very few roles demand an Asian lead so henceforth they're paid much less than their Caucasian counterparts.

87% of primary school teachers are women. Primary school teachers make the lowest wage among similarly educated and skilled workers.

This article suggests that to be a "non-issue", that some jobs just pay more than others. The 77 Cent on the dollar gap is a statistic that can be misused, but it can also be used to highlight real issues. Let's not get confused about things. Teachers should be paid more, and that would help with the wage gap.

People don't seem to understand that causality != causation. Even if "77 cents for 1$" is true (I don't know, and the statistics thrown seem biased as fuck), it doesn't mean that this is BECAUSE they're women that they earn less.

Basically they took the wages of ALL full time workers, male/female, and compared them. Once you control for career choice and marriage the gap disappears.

This is an ethical issue more than an economic issue. Islington addresses it quite well, but I wanted to add something. Currently, the barrier to entry into primary education is quite low. This causes a boatload of people to be qualified for the position. What I believe should be happening is a higher restriction on teaching primary education, in the form of some post undergraduate education or previous experience in a field pertaining to what you would be teaching. This is merely an off-the-cuff remark, so do not take it for high worth.

Some of us value those who devote themselves to teaching highly.

Without teachers, we're hardly going to educate ourselves at a level higher than "this is what I need to survive."

Because apparently people still think teachers are for teaching, and not for parroting propaganda of whoever is in power word-for-word into our children.

There's a reason we teach Rotes Learning and not critical thinking in schools.

But you have to look at the average work lifespan of a teacher. Many, many teachers take the position because they like kids and follow a young education degree plan only to find out they do not like kids, the pay is not high enough to make them stay and they leave for other fields or they get married and leave the workforce altogether.

I've actually heard people take it one step further by saying "for the same work", which is just a straight up lie, as opposed to misleading.

We do have such a strong victim movement it is crazy. Many people lie to make themselves seem as if they were oppressed! "Guys, if you invert social hierarchy you are not better than crazy early-modern colonialist. You just give unfair advantage to different people."

A comment on reddit explained the actual problem women face in the work place is that because they're less likely to demand a promotion or leave when it goes to someone else, they end up in stagnant careers.

This isn't an easy problem to fix, because the employers are acting rationally and there's not much we can do without setting quotas.

Or women could start seeking higher paying jobs if they get skipped for a promotion. If you're a woman reading this, and you're up for a promotion, start looking at that position at other companies. Obviously don't leave without having something lined up.

This is correct and not a gender neutral issue. When I turned 21 I had a higher paying job than my father who was in his late 40s and had been at the same company in the same position for twelve years. He hated it but he did not have the courage to pluck up and ask for a promotion or leave for another company. For the record he was a mid level manager at a large company making 120k a year and had only gotten a ~2% raise a year since he started there and his boss was about ten years his junior.

Yeah, it seems like one of those issues that happens to affect more women because they tend to have those personality traits, but it isn't a malicious institutional problem.

[–] Zeabos 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Im going to go ahead and say that you having a higher paying job than your father had very little to do with your ability to "ask for a promotion" and his inability to do so. It probably had to do with the fact that your father made that much and was able to offer a stable consistent environment for you to obtain skills that would allow you to enter a field that allows you to make that much.

Turns out being a middle manager at a large company doesnt give you a lot of leverage, especially if you are an older person. And being 21 and willing to ask for a promotion doesn't guarantee any salary.

The problem is that the feminists are way more determined. In the time it takes to get just one to shut up, you could have... had a life or something.
