He's lucky he was already out of the military. A dishonorable discharge on your record prohibits you from voting, owning firearms, any government aid, including unemployment and disability. It also strips you and your family from VA benefits, loans, and government pension/retirement pay.

I believe a felony conviction carries similar restrictions in a civilian court too, not 100% sure.

I'm not seeing if this was a felony or not. They very well may have banned him from voting.
