Well I guess it depends what you mean by average and what you want to normalize the data to. Life expectancy is an interesting statistic. It doesn't say anything about quality of life. Because of medical advancements fat unhealthy people can live to be very old, this doesn't mean they led a happy, joy filled life. 80 years of being out of breath and unable to walk up stairs doesn't sound as good as being healthy and happy for 60. Does medical advancement make America great? He was talking about governmental policy, not building a time machine. I would be surprised if he wanted to live back then when you compare it to now. I think he just wants the government to not treat him like its bitch. That's how he defines great. Having a government that cares about and respects you is great.

I'm not sure I agree with not allowing children to work, hard work is good for us, especially growing up. I think child labor regulation is all that was necessary.

And on that note, how can you know it wasn't great for the average person if you didn't live through it.

Other than medicine, which he wasn't talking about, I don't see what's wrong with his claim.

There will always be something to point out about a period of time and say hey this is terrible what are you talking about. It's not like people were miserable. It was just one part of life and it wasn't constantly shoved in your face like today.

should an 18 year old have the option of going to work in a factory instead of taking on debt to go to college and then push papers?

Never mind ten-year-olds, adults can't even work in factories anymore because decades of globalism and crony socialism have outsourced all those jobs to the third world.
