From what I understand the refugees (appx 25 000 or so) that were brought in en masse came from Jordanian and Lebanese refugee camps, and had been there for some time. Therefore, they've more more thoroughly vetted than the hordes of people coming into Europe from who knows where. Whether we'll have problems down the line remains to be seen.
There are a couple of things about this mass influx of refugees that bother me. Due to the downturn in the price of oil there are many Canadians that are hurting financially, and we already have a lot of existing problems with our own citizens. The federal government is putting in the interests of refugees ahead of its own citizens. The cost - thought to be somewhere around $1.2 billion. This money could be used to help my fellow Canadians who need help first. Also many of these refugees are being resettled in very expensive urban centers like Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. I'm originally from Vancouver, and am a tradesman making a decent living. I can't afford to live in Vancouver anymore because it's so expensive. Seeing refugees being settled there on my dime (and fellow taxpayers) really chaps my ass.

When talking to others I brought up the same point about the cost. "We haven't recovered from the financial meltdown, and not to go on about 'why spend more' but since when do we care about Syria?" And I've been called cynical for that (deserved, but not that I care), but my point stands, can anyone name me off the top of their head when we've taken in refugees (even a just a small amount). I know that Canada has donated to help earthquake victims, but that's different, sending help and taking in refugees is differences apart.
