Well, if you read the article those numbers are way off with Hillary having a lot more and Trump with several thousand.
Interesting point is that even though Hillary is out spending by leagues yet still doesn't have much of a lead over Trump. Polls seem to be fluctuating about 4% either way for both Candidates.
This expenditure difference speaks a lot for what we are getting this year.

This falls in line with what we saw in the primaries. Sanders isn't a huge name in politics, and she had the entire DNC and media machines on her side, yet she still couldn't put him away.
