Actually they have been growing a lot since 08. They have organized with other Moderate republican groups, and have been taking the party back from the retarded tea party. They are part of the reason why the republicans dominate so many state government positions.
Ted Cruz was the last gasp of the old school conservative. He was an under performing, pathetic nut job who was a snake, and was overwhelmingly rejected by the american people. The lynch pin of his campaign was evangelical voters, and getting them out to vote. It turns out, their numbers where grossly inflated.

So much lost ground. The party of personal autonomy welcomed the evangelicals and the rest of the religious right during Reagan's 1980 campaign. The so called "moral majority" and other religious groups basked in new-found political power. They gleefully removed plank after plank in the GOP platform.
The end result was an American theocratic movement little different than the bastards we keep fighting in the middle east. Sure their God was the One True God and anyone who disagreed is an infidel. Zero tolerance for gay people, women, believers of different faiths, or believers of the same faith who support any civi rights for the infidels. Entirely "unchristian" but there it is.

There where a lot of factors going on back then, that people missed.
Reagan was not successful because of the religious right, he was successful because carter sucked. Then there where the televangelists. People assumed that they where popular because their churches where rich and big. In reality they where just good at scamming stupid old women.
The wake up call for the republican party was Romney's defeat. Upon researching why he lost to Obama one surprising factor showed up: He was a Mormon. It turns out that his religion made him untrustworthy in the eyes of most Americans, especially evangelicals.
The good thing about republicans, is that they have a lot of schemers, and these schemers came to the conclusion that the economy is what everyone cares about. So now they are changing, to be completely focused on economic growth. And that is what trump is campaigning on.
