Greetings, ladies, gentlemen, and spammers! I know you're here, spammers! And if you spam, I'mma ban your sorry ass so hard it'll make your head spin. But anyway, I'm not here to talk to you about how spammers, and people who write slash fanfiction about me and spammers will be dealt with. That's the next lecture in the series. No, today, I'm talking about Godwin's Law. More specifically, its place in discussions in this sub.
Let's start at the beginning. Godwin's Law is an adage that states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazism or Hitler approaches 1." It was coined in 1990, originally referring to Usenet. In the intervening 26 years, however, it has been broadened to be applicable to any internet discussion. In 2012, it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
While this does not necessarily mean whoever brought up the Nazis loses the argument (despite what some people claim), it's groanworthy whenever someone tries to shoot down an opposing argument by comparing the other side to genocidal war criminals. Was what the Nazis did wrong? Yes, but comparing someone or something you disagree with to them, unless your opponent is actually suggesting genocide, forced labor based solely on the fact that someone is part of a group they don't like, Invading Poland, or anything else the Nazis did, is lazy and, in some cases (namely, when the person or idea is not suggesting something morally wrong, especially something that the Nazis did), a logical fallacy. Said fallacy is Reductio ad Hitlerium. It's basically a branch of the logical fallacy ad hominem. When presenting an argument, you should NEVER use a logical fallacy.
Beyond that and the fact that it's lazier than Rob Liefeld's character designs (and his artwork in general), it makes you look like you have no idea what you're talking about. Also, there are better ways of pointing out that something's a bad idea, even if you must be hyperbolic.
I'm not asking much. All I'm asking is that you only use Nazi comparisons if the person you disagree with is actually suggesting something bad that the Nazis actually did. I won't step in unless things get way out of hand, site rules are violated, and/or spam occurs.
