Edward Theodore Gein (/ˈɡiːn/; August 27, 1906[2] – July 26, 1984), also known as The Butcher of Plainfield, was an American murderer and body snatcher. His crimes, committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety after authorities discovered that Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. Gein confessed to killing two women – tavern owner Mary Hogan in 1954, and a Plainfield hardware store owner, Bernice Worden in 1957. Gein was initially found unfit to stand trial and confined to a mental health facility. In 1968, Gein was found guilty but legally insane of the murder of Worden,[3] and was remanded to psychiatric institutions. He died at Mendota Mental Health Institute of cancer-induced liver and respiratory failure at age 77 on July 26, 1984. He is buried next to his family in the Plainfield Cemetery, in a now-unmarked grave.
Ed Gein was born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, USA, on August 27, 1906,[2] the second of two boys of George Philip Gein (1873–1940[4]) and Augusta Wilhelmine (née Lehrke) Gein (1878–1945[5]).
During questioning, Waushara County sheriff Art Schley reportedly assaulted Gein by banging his head and face into a brick wall. As a result, Gein's initial confession was ruled inadmissible.[13][48] Schley died of heart failure at age 43 in 1968, before Gein's trial.[49] Many who knew Schley said he was traumatized by the horror of Gein's crimes, and this, along with the fear of having to testify (especially about assaulting Gein), caused his death. One of his friends said: "He was a victim of Ed Gein as surely as if he had butchered him."[13]
Lampshades made from human skin
The display of the flayed skin of defeated enemies has a long history. In ancient Assyria, the flaying of defeated enemies and dissidents was common practice. The Assyrians would leave the skin to tan on their city walls.[1]
Ed Gein was a killer and body snatcher, active in the 1950s, who made trophies from corpses he stole from a local graveyard. When he was finally arrested, a search of the premises revealed, among other disturbing artifacts, a lampshade made out of human skin.[5] Gein appears to have been influenced by the then-current stories about the Nazis collecting body parts in order to make lampshades and other items.[6]
In 1995, August Kreis III was ejected from the set of The Jerry Springer Show after telling the host "Your relatives — weren't they all turned into soap or lampshades?... I've got your mom in the trunk of my car".[8]
August_Kreis_III
In 1999 Kreis joined the Aryan Nations.[5] After the death of Aryan Nations leader Richard Girnt Butler, in a power struggle, Kreis assumed leadership positions within the Aryan Nations, which caused a split within the organization.[2]
Kreis was known locally for harassing neighbors and townspeople with whom he disagreed.[2] Police lodged numerous charges against him, but he was never convicted of any of them.[2] After a divorce from his first wife, he was barred from contacting her.[2]
In early 2012, he quit the Aryan Nations while in prison, passing leadership of the organization to Drew Bostwick.[13]
On February 19, 2014, Kreis was arrested on six counts of sexual abuse of children in Richland County, South Carolina.[14]
On November 5, 2015, a Lexington County, South Carolina judge sentenced Kreis to 50 years in prison for child molestation. After a three-day trial, a Lexington County jury found Kreis, age 61, guilty of one count of criminal sexual conduct involving a minor child and two counts of committing lewd acts on a child. Kreis was sentenced to serve two 15-year sentences and one 20-year sentence, all to run consecutively.[15][16] During his sentencing, he held up a sign urging people to vote for Donald Trump for president.[17]
